The Impact of Sugar Tax on Consumption
IELTS Writing Task 2
Response: Some health problems can be caused by consuming too much high-in-sugar foods and beverages. I totally disagree with the statement of considering higher prices in sweet goods because this can increase the costs of other goods and result in monetary extreme situations. Additionally, sugary goods are not always detrimental to people’s health, so people should be aware of correct intake of these foods in order to adapt their sugar consumption to their diets.
It is generally believed that increasing the cost of foods leads to increment of other goods. The price of different items are correlated because people are always trading with each other, so if the cost of a product increases, the price of other items will see upward trends, as well. As a result, when people who want to buy sugary foods face an increment in the cost of sugary products, they have no choice but to increase the price of their own products in order to combat the lack required money for buying sugary products. Consequently, when the prices of many items increase, hard economic situations appear, so all the citizens and even the governments face some challenges, such as recession, inflation to name but a few. Therefore, increasing the price of sweetened goods is not an efficient way for restricting people from buying these foods and drinks.
Admittedly, foods and drinks which are high in sugar can bring diseases, however, they contain some minerals which are crucial for humans’ bodies. For example, if governments limit consumption of sweet foods in a strict way, people face some diseases, namely low blood pressure, because people need necessary minerals in order to continue their livings in an healthy way. Nevertheless, consuming too much sugar results in some diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. However, people cannot strike a balance for their sugar consumption by monetary aspects because their behavior should receive more attention, not their pockets. Instead, In order to make a compromise between these two issues, people should be aware of the exact amount of sugar consumption for each age, which can be done by food scientists via mass media and social media. Thus, consumption of sweet foods and drinks should not be controlled by increasing the price of these goods, while making aware people of the right consumption of them is more effective.
In conclusion, many goods which contain a great deal of sugar can bring illnesses for people. One probable solution is considering an increment in the price of foods and goods, while I claim that his is a negative development because when the price of these foods increase, costs of other items will increase, too. Moreover, people’s knowledge of using sweeteners should be increased by skilled doctors and there should not be any restriction in sugar consumption.
