Response: The right age for children to begin formal schooling has long been debated. Some argue that an early start gives children an academic advantage, while others believe that a later start protects their wellbeing and love of learning. This essay will discuss both perspectives before giving my own view. Supporters of early education point out that young children absorb information quickly. In their first years, children learn languages, numbers and social rules with remarkable ease, so beginning school at four or five allows teachers to build on this natural capacity. Furthermore, in families where both parents work, school provides a structured and safe environment. Children who start early often develop discipline and social skills sooner than their peers, which may help them throughout their academic lives. On the other hand, opponents claim that formal lessons at a very young age can be harmful. Children who are pushed into reading and writing before they are ready may become anxious and lose their curiosity. In countries such as Finland, where school starts at seven, pupils nevertheless achieve excellent results, suggesting that an early start is not essential for success. These critics argue that play-based learning develops creativity and emotional strength more effectively than desks and worksheets. In my opinion, a balanced approach is best. Children should join kindergartens that emphasise play and social interaction from an early age, but formal academic instruction should begin around six or seven. This combination provides the benefits of structure without sacrificing the joy of childhood. In conclusion, although early schooling offers practical and academic advantages, delaying formal instruction is more likely to produce confident and motivated learners.
