Response:
There are different views about whether acquiring elderly population of a society to use computer is a productive approach. While some argue that it is beneficial as they enabled to become familiar with the internet and online applications, others, including myself, argue that investing in raising digital literacy among young individuals is more beneficial. Firstly, most of elderly population do not strive to learn about new technologies because they are more engaged with what they have learned in the past. Therefore a significant group of them prefers not to spend time to learn how to use computer. However, others who are interested in using computer choose to learn a limited scope of skills that is practical for them. Additionally, learning through their children is privileged rather than a stranger as they feel more convenient to ask questions several times from one of their relatives. Thus, I believe that investing in these courses may not be as productive as expected. Secondly, nowadays young generation is highly involved in the internet and technology-related jobs. Many people who are aiming to start online shops or college students who are planning to work in different markets, such as technology, advertisement, and business need to expertise in working with computer. Therefore, training the workforces or the students who are going to work as professionals in their sectors should be prioritized. This prioritization not only brings up a digital literate nation in near future but also provides employees for jobs that requires computer skills. Consequently, it addresses the employers concerns and increases job opportunities. In conclusion, I believe 65-year-olds can be trained to use computers by their relatives to meet their needs, while the development of computer literacy among young people either students or workforce is more beneficial for societal and economic advancement.
