Some people think that instead of preventing climate change, we need to find a way to live with it. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
A lot has been said and done about how we should find a way to prevent the effects of climate change. Some people maintain that it is better to adapt instead of preventing the consequences. I believe this proposal might be valid only to some extent.
One reason for adaptation is that the consequences of climate change are inevitable. Although some preventive actions have been taken regarding climate change, the negative consequences, such as carbon emissions, have not been completely mitigated. Therefore, we should adapt to these negative effects. An additional reason for this opinion is that adaptation is an immediate action. Although preventive actions have long-term and global effects, adaptive actions are immediate and instant. By planting drought-resistant crops in deprived areas such as Africa, for instance, positive effects in a short time can be created.
However, adaptation cannot solve the root causes of climate change. This is because by just focusing on adaptation, we merely address the symptoms without solving the underlying causes that led to this situation. Moreover, preventive actions can unlock job opportunities. The reason is that by shifting towards green technologies and renewable energies instead of fossil fuels, we can create greater employment possibilities for job seekers, fostering innovation and resulting in better economic growth in the long run.
In conclusion, although adaptation is a smart bet in areas where the effects of climate change are unavoidable and need immediate action, it is not a universal truth since it ignores the underlying causes of climate change. More importantly, the better job opportunities from this development should not be ignored. Therefore, I think this opinion is valid to some extent, because it looks only at one side of the matter while overlooking the other side.
