There is an ongoing debate about the connection between crime and technology, with some people arguing that technological development has led to a decline in crime, while others believe that technological advancements may increase criminal intent. This essay will examine both views, and in my opinion, both perspectives have merit, and a balanced approach is necessary depending on the context.
Supporters of the reduction in crime due to technological development believe that modern equipment becomes available as a result of technological advancements. In this case, governments take advantage of these facilities; for instance, CCTV cameras are installed in public areas for fundamental reasons such as security infrastructure, fast response to incidents, and gathering evidence. In this situation, using these tools may affect the criminal’s intention and deter them from committing a crime. As a result, the measure of crime and offenses will decrease, thus society becomes safer, and individuals can live in peace and tranquility.
On the other hand, proponents of the view that technology increases the intention to commit crime argue that as technology advances, individuals' awareness could increase by accessing the media and apps. Consequently, online frauds such as phishing, cyber fraud, identity theft, and charity fraud could happen more than before, and individuals become victims of deception. The increasing number of deceptions has resulted in more individuals suffering financial losses. In addition, due to a depressed economy, losing money leads to poverty. Accordingly, poverty contributes to mental issues such as depression and anxiety.
In conclusion, both views offer valuable insights. I believe that rather than fully adopting one side, it is more practical to find a middle ground that combines the strengths of both approaches. However, the importance of proper management in order to solve the challenges cannot be overlooked.
